Before discussing cataract surgery you will have a consultation to assess the eye, and confirm that the cause for your blurred vision is actually a cataract. This is a very important visit, as many other diseases can cause blurred vision, and it is imperative that these are recognised so they can be treated, if required.
Once the diagnosis of cataract is confirmed, the process of surgery will be explained including the risks and benefits. You will then be able to make a decision whether cataract surgery is in your best interests.
The options regarding surgery will also be discussed. For example, the focusing length of the eye, the date of surgery, the type of anaesthetic and the day surgery facility.
The next step is to take measurements of the eye (biometry). These are required to calculate the focusing strength of the lens that will be placed in your eye during the surgery.
Finally, you will be given a breakdown of the fees. This depends on your level of health insurance cover.
If you are happy to proceed, the date will be confirmed and the consent form completed acknowledging that the surgery has been explained to you, and you are happy to proceed.
